So much of the perception of being a successful filmmaker, an artist, a star, is captured by the setting in the Cannes Riviera. Just sitting on the deck of a yacht during the height of the festival gives one a feeling of such euphoria. One feels that money isn't that hard to get. All one has to do is speak eloquently or even just enthusiastically about film and voila the money will materialize. At the Cannes Film Festival, people of very limited means rub shoulders with movie stars and millionaires, just because they filmed something about their lives, maybe about their miseries or tragedies, and suddenly they're caught up in the hoopla of art and literature. They can win a prize, maybe even the Palm d'Or. Cannes in May is a beautiful experience, if nothing else one feels like a human being.
